Arts EducationSchool DistrictsA key goal of Arts for All is to establish a strong foundation and deepen school district capacity to implement arts education. Upon joining Arts for All, school districts are eligible for a variety of services to help them realize their goals:
For more information, please see Arts for All: Benefits of Participation. Progress to Date To date, 39 districts have joined the initiative. These districts represent 510,053 K-12 public school students (53% of the County public school population minus the Los Angeles Unified School Districts, which has a separate arts education initiative). 28 Arts for All school districts have adopted a board-approved policy or plan, 22 have hired Arts Coordinators, and nearly all use general fund dollars as a source of funding for arts education. Arts for All School Districts: In 2007, recognizing the vital role of district level Arts Coordinators in implementing arts education plans, the Arts Commission and LA County Office of Education launched the Arts Education Leadership Series to give Arts Coordinators from all LA County districts opportunities in networking, mentoring, and professional development. In 2008, the Arts for All Executive Committee commissioned a series of case studies on eleven vanguard school districts that joined the initiative within its first five years. The case studies document the progress made and issues confronted by each school district during the early stages of planning and implementing their arts plans. A full copy of the report is available for download. The same year, the Executive Committee released the 2008 Arts Education Performance Indicators Report, which documents LA County school districts’ progress in building infrastructure to support long-term commitment to arts education. The report indicates significant improvement in districts’ ability to meet critical success factors of arts education infrastructure. Arts for All also launched Designing the Arts Learning Community: a Handbook for K-12 Professional Development Planners on LAArtsEd.Org. The handbook is a guide to designing arts education professional development and includes a searchable database of more than 50 arts learning communities. What’s Next Thanks to the support of The Wallace Foundation, Arts for All is working to deepen its partnership with school districts, developing a Leadership Fellows program for district leaders, and providing more comprehensive support to Arts Coordinators. More Information If you are interested in becoming an Arts for All school district, please contact Kimberleigh Aarn, Senior Planning Manager, by email or at (213)202-5858. |
