The El Cariso Community Regional Park was named for the El Cariso Hot Shots, a firefighting crew that lost ten members while fighting the Loop Fire of 1966. The 79-acre park, located in Sylmar, includes a golf course, swimming pool, tennis courts, picnic tables, playground, sports and baseball fields.
In 2008, the pool and pool house were renovated, including replacement of 1,000 linear feet of chain link fencing surrounding the pool. In partnership with Pedersen, Beckhart, Wesley, and Stice Architects (PBWS), artist Rod Baer developed a custom fence design.
In addition to the pool and pool house renovation, the County is building a 15,000 square foot facility that will include a gymnasium, multi-purpose room, classroom, full kitchen and outdoor courtyard that can be rented for special events. The project will be implemented using the design-build method and will be silver certified by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), a program of the U.S. Green Building Council. An artist will design artwork for the entrance lobby and consult with the contractor on the design of exterior fencing and gates and landscaping for the courtyard.
The project is scheduled to be complete in December 2010.
