The Friends of the Agoura Hills Library commissioned Denise Jones to paint this mural when the new Library was built in 2001. The mural, done in acrylic paint, depicts a sunlit grassy meadow in which deer and other California wildlife appear. The image curves along the wall in the Library’s children’s section. The mural is reminiscent of both Hudson River School landscapes and illustrations from early 20th century children’s books. Jones painted the mural which measures 15’ h x 22’ w in five weeks as construction progressed on the Library and it was revealed at the Library’s opening on October 27, 2001.

About the Artist: Denise Jones was a 24 year-old student at California State University Long Beach when she won the commission to create a mural for the new Agoura Hills Library. At the time she was also a resident of nearby Thousand Oaks and had painted a mural for a dentist’s office which was brought to the attention of the Library Design Committee. Since the mural’s completion, Denise Jones has studied in Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti and received an MFA from the New York Academy of Fine Art. In addition to painting, she now teaches art at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California.
