Detail of artist's past work

Artist Kim Emerson was selected to design and install a monumental artwork for Cerritos Regional Park. The five piece sculpture that tells conveys the history of water in the region. The artwork will be arranged in an inviting circular pattern that will encourage visitors to gather and learn. Each sculpture will be clad with glass and ceramic tile mosaics; the largest sculpture, approximately 12’ high, will feature a powder coated aluminum “sun” that will cast a shadow onto the other four sculptures during the spring equinox. Because Cerritos Regional Park is shared by the City of Cerritos and Los Angeles County, this project sets precedent as the first City-County civic art collaboration. The project is schedule to be complete in the fall of 2008.

About the Artist: Kim Emerson, a San Diego-based artist, creates mosaic murals and three-dimensional sculptures. Her working method involves carefully cutting glass, ceramic tile, and found objects and then piecing them together in new ways. Her public commissions include a fountain at the Sun Harbor Marina in San Diego, a “Play Space” at the Harding Family Community Center in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, and a mural at the entrance to the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. She designs her work to be site-specific and often uses motifs from nature and ancient cultures. Emerson also holds an MS degree in Historic Preservation of Architecture from the University of Oregon.
