Bio: Phil Ranelin's music has been categorized in the Japanese Jazz press as "spiritual jazz," inspired by Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Abdul Rahim Ibrahim (Doug Carn) and other jazz leaders who create music that raises the spiritual consciousness of their audiences. Ranelin's technical mastery of the slide trombone is in the J.J. Johnson tradition and expands into calls of nature, the human voice and futuristic techno sounds. Ranelin is known around the globe as a composer, arranger and leader of his ensemble, as a Freddie Hubbard sideman and as co-founder of Detroit's TRIBE indy jazz movement.
