Organizational Development Program

The Arts Commission staff is a community resource for public information about cultural activities in the County. Also as part of the Commission’s commitment to service, a comprehensive consultancy program provides assistance to arts organizations in addition to grant funds. Organizational development assistance to grant organizations includes one-on-one consulting, seminars, workshops, and symposia, as well as a forum for peer networking. The program provides professional development for arts organizations, and management training skills for arts administrators and artists. Organizational development topics include strategic long-range planning, audience development, marketing, fund development, public relations, and board development.

The Commission is a member of Americans for the Arts and the California Assembly of Local Arts Agencies, and helps connect county cultural activities to statewide and national networks.

INFORMATION FOR CONSULTANTS

In fiscal year 2001-2002 the Commission is making several changes to its technical assistance program. In the past the Commission has provided individual consultancies for up to 30 organizations that are recipients of grant funding in the OGP I (Small Budget) and OGP II (Mid-size Budget) grant categories. In addition we have provided periodic workshops and other staff and board development opportunities.

For 2001-2002, the Commission is introducing a new arts leadership initiative, which is based upon the Fieldstone Foundation model and provides an intensive learning opportunity for eligible executive directors in OGP II - Option 2. In addition the Commission will provide quarterly workshops and other learning opportunities for all organizations in the OGP II program. The Commission is also exploring new strategies for OGP I technical assistance, which may mean phasing out individual consultancies in lieu of other development opportunities for those grantees.

While the Commission may be phasing out the individual consultancy model in its technical assistance programs, it will still have an ongoing need for access to consultants for other projects and it will maintain its consultant database as a service to its constituents. The Commission also fields local, state and national requests for consultants by making its consultant list available to other interested parties.
