Description

Join Pacific Opera Project (POP) as an Education and Community Engagement Intern and gain hands-on experience in arts education and community outreach! Working approximately 15-20 hours per week from July through December, the intern will assist in teaching introductory opera-focused curriculum to K-12 students in LA public schools (mainly in NELA), as well as help plan and execute family-friendly engagement activities connected to POP’s performances. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in both arts education and event production while being part of a dynamic and inclusive mentoring team.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have some experience and a genuine interest in working with children and diverse communities, along with a passion for the arts. In classroom settings, flexibility and a solution-oriented attitude are essential. The intern will need to adapt to different learning levels and individual student needs. Strong organizational and communication skills support both classroom work and event planning. Conversational Spanish is preferred, but not required. Above all, the candidate must be committed to fostering inclusive and welcoming environments for students and audience members of all backgrounds.  The position requires commuting to schools and event sites mostly in Northeast Los Angeles, with a few sites in Greater LA. Reliable access to personal transportation is ideal but not required; many of our teaching artists successfully use ride-shares or public transportation. The intern should be available for occasional evening and weekend work, particularly for events.

Background

LA Magazine states, “If you think you hate opera, you’ve probably never seen a Pacific Opera Project show.” POP’s regularly sold-out performances take place in diverse venues, from outdoor settings to small clubs, large amphitheaters, and warehouses. POP’s current team has 3 FT staff, 6 PT staff, c. 60 volunteers, and hires up to 150 contracted artists/production staff per season. POP’s Education & Community Engagement Department was established in 2021 to support ABIDE (Accessibility, Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity), organizationally and through engagement events (6350+ served) and education programs (1,700+ students served, provided at no cost to Title I schools).
