Capacity Building Assessment Toolkit: How to Create an Effective Case Study

Bring Your Data to Life

In addition to a survey or focus groups, a case study is an effective way to share specific, illustrative examples of your capacity building services and the impact on participants. Case studies are typically informed by one or more interviews and review of existing reports or other supporting documents that help create/explain the context. A case study gives participants the opportunity to tell the story of how they used your capacity building services, in their own words. Case studies provide more insight on an individual level (e.g., one organization or person) rather than an aggregate level (e.g., group of organizations). Case studies are often used to complement other data, such as surveys on what the impact has been, and more fully explain how and why certain impacts occurred.
