Christopher Garcia Headshot
Mesoamerican Instruments

Join us for a free sunset performance by multi-instrumentalist and composer Christopher Garcia alongside his group Flower Songs Music (Xochi Cuicatl) on the East Los Angeles Civic Center's floating Lake Stage. This event celebrates the installation of Garcia's musical composition in Atlantic Avenue Park, which is part of a project marking the County’s first permanent sound art installations.

Xochi Cuicatl presents original compositions with indigenous breath, string, and percussion of Mesoamerica and Mexico along with poetry and song in Nahuatl, Purepecha and Spanish. Garcia is known for his mastery of ancient Mesoamerican instruments, including the huilacapiztli (clay ocarina), stone marimba, and Raramuri double-sided. The event will open with a talk on Mesoamerican instruments and archaeological field research from Alegría Garcia, MA, and will conclude with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions about each instrument after the performance. This event will honor the cultural and historical significance of the upcoming Atlantic Ave Park sound art installation and engage the community through an immersive artistic experience.

This event is presented by LA County Department of Arts and Culture in collaboration with Label Curatorial, Narin Dickerson, and Maryam Hosseinzadeh.
