AYCE, 2020, Video

AYCE is a rap music video. Created during the first summer of the COVID-19 pandemic, the song explores topics of racial identity, community ownership, and social disruption. The video was filmed at Hop Woo, an LA Chinatown mainstay run by Chef Lupe Liang and his wife Judy. From the 1871 Massacre (our state's largest public lynching) to the pandemic-era shuttering of small businesses, Chinatown has contended with anti-Asian xenophobia throughout its history. This video presents Chinatown culture, business, and community in a celebratory light. It also serves as a posthumous tribute to Chef Liang, after his passing away Spring 2022.
